GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?
SEO optimizes to rank links in search results; GEO optimizes to be named and cited inside AI-generated answers. They share foundations but optimize for different outcomes.
Different outcomes
SEO's unit of success is a ranked link a user clicks. GEO's is a mention or citation inside a synthesized answer the user may act on without clicking. As AI answers absorb more queries, being in the answer matters as much as ranking beneath it.
What carries over
Authority, helpful and accurate content, clean information architecture, and structured data all help both. A site that earns trust and is easy to parse is easier for an AI to quote correctly.
What's new in GEO
GEO adds factors SEO doesn't fully cover: what a model learned in training, what it retrieves live, how it synthesizes sources, and the sentiment it attaches to your brand. Measuring those requires reading AI answers directly — see AI share of voice and the State of AI Brand Visibility report.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No — it extends it. SEO foundations help GEO, but GEO optimizes for how AI models name and cite brands in generated answers, a channel beyond traditional link ranking.
Should I do GEO or SEO first?
Do both: strong SEO fundamentals (authority, structure, schema) are largely the same investments that lift GEO. The difference is adding measurement of, and optimization for, AI answers.
