What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice is the percentage of all brand mentions your brand captures in AI assistant answers across a set of category questions — the AI-era version of share of voice.
The formula
Take a set of category questions ("best Greek yogurt", "top oat milk brands"), collect the AI answers, and count brand mentions. If assistants name brands 200 times and 30 of those are yours, your AI share of voice is 15%. It is a relative measure — your visibility against the competitors named alongside you, not an absolute score.
Why it matters
An AI answer typically names only a few brands. Share of voice tells you whether you are consistently one of them or whether competitors own the conversation. Tracked over time and across models, it shows whether your GEO efforts are working.
How to grow it
Improve the inputs AI relies on — authoritative content, third-party mentions, consistent entity data — and watch which competitors take the share you don't. Famewise computes your AI share of voice across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini; see where you stand with a free AI visibility check or browse the category leaderboards.
Frequently asked questions
How is AI share of voice calculated?
It is your brand's mentions divided by all brand mentions across a set of AI answers to category questions, expressed as a percentage. One answer contributes at most one mention per brand.
What is a good AI share of voice?
It depends on the category and the number of brands competing. The useful signal is relative and directional: your share versus named competitors, and whether it rises run over run as you improve your AI presence.
